Maryland is Located on the East Coast of the United States. According to the U.S Census Bureau, Maryland is the second wealthiest state in the U.S. with an average yearly household income of over $61,500. Nicknamed the “Free state,” Maryland has become a world leader in life sciences boasting prestigious institutions such as the John Hopkins University.
The State bird, the Oriole, can be seen in all parts of the state and is considered to be a symbol of pride among the residents of Maryland, the state has a varied topography leading to subsequently different flora and climate depending on which region of the state one is situated. The eastern part of the state is known for its humid sub tropical summers with a relatively mild winter where as the western part of the state generally receives a snowy winter.
Places of historical significance within Maryland include Fort McHenry, important to U.S History as during the War of Independence the British attempted to capture the port of Baltimore only to be fended off by Fort McHenry, whilst situated at the Fort during the bombardment Francis Scott Key wrote the American National Anthem Star Spangled Banner.
